Now there is a masters degree in “northerness”

A new non-stereotyping course on all things northern is being launched by Leeds University.

The masters degree will feature cultural references of the highest order including The Beatles and David Hockney rather than dissertations on the “affect of the northern terrace alley on gender stereotyping on the politics of East Yorkshire from 1898-9.”

The course will be at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Why Leeds? It is more to the north than Manchester.

    Hi Rob,

    I couldn’t resist…

Do they train your to wear a cloth cap, say Ay-Oop and to keep pigeons?

In fact is it a politically correct degree at all?

This is surely too specialised for an MA, if any of these post grad students progress to PhD and beyond, they’re hardly going to become well-rounded academics now are they? Unless of course this is one module on an MA course rather than the whole thing itself.

Amusing thing is that most students in Leeds seem to be southerners who only talk to local Yorkshire people when buying alcohol or catching a bus. Never used to be like this when the student grants were around – the blend was much more electic in terms of both where people came from and their class background – from what I can remember anyway.

    Chris,

I remember, [dusts the cobwebs away], the times of grants. And Manchester University attracted a wider spread of the total UK population. Mind you the Universities weren’t trying to cram in 50% of the each years school/college leavers then.
